NEW DELHI: The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has expressed strong “disagreement” with the “laudatory” comments made on Monday by a Delhi court Judge on R. K. Sharma, suspended Inspector General of Police, while sentencing him to life in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case. In a statement issued here on Tuesday, AIDWA president Subhashini Ali urged the Delhi government to appeal to the High Court to strike down the comments which, it said, set a damaging precedent in such cases. “It is an indication of the falling standards of the judiciary that a high ranking police officer, who misused his office to cold-bloodedly plan and execute the murder of a young woman, should be described as an ‘asset to the nation.” On the contrary if an officer, duty bound to act as a custodian of law, committed such a gruesome criminal act, the dimension of the crime got increased. “While the life sentence is correct, the comments, extraneous to the case, should not be allowed to be used to grant any form of reprieve to R. K. Sharma on that account by the executive,” Ms Ali said.
