Two folk dancers gunned down
Correspondent
IMPHAL: Two teenage girls, both dancers, were gunned down and seven others wounded on Monday night when some persons opened fire on folk dancers at Heirok in Thoubal district. The condition of a man and a girl is said to be critical.
Performing folk dances at night is part of the traditional Holi celebrations of Manipuris. The celebrations were in full swing when the firing began.
Proscribed underground organisations have not imposed any ban on dancing during the five-day festivities. As such, the involvement of the militants is ruled out for now. Night curfew, clamped following the recent massacre of 15 migrant workers, is still in force. But it cannot be enforced in view of the festivities. Angry villagers urged the government to find out the killers, failing which they would launch agitations.
On Friday two tribal girls were brought to this district by some motorcycle borne youths and were gunned down. There is no claim by the militants and the police have not made any breakthrough despite a deadline set by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi.
Some top level politicians who did not want to be quoted said certain forces were trying to ignite the communal tinder, since the victims were carefully selected from different communities.
