DUBAI: Iran will hold its second round of parliamentary elections on April 25. More than 80 seats would be contested in the run-off parliamentary polls. In the first round of elections that were held on March 14, the conservatives secured 132 out of a total of 290 seats. Around one-third of the conservatives who have won are critics of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Iran’s Guardian Council, loyal to Supreme Leader Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had barred many of the reformist candidates from contesting. Nevertheless, the reformists managed to capture 31 seats in the new Parliament. Independents, whose political leanings are not yet known, secured 39 seats.
