Mumbai: A trophy named after two great cricketers of India and South Africa and dedicating it to India-South Africa Test series will be a fine and wonderful gesture, Dr. Ali Bacher, told The Hindu from Johannesburg. Dr. Bacher, who was in the vanguard of South Africa’s return to mainstream cricket after more than two decades of isolation, said: “Wherever I travel in the sub-continent, I meet a lot of people and two South African names that I have often heard is Nelson Mandela and Jonty Rhodes. It’s up to the BCCI and Cricket South Africa to take the initiative. “Politically, India and South Africa have close ties. India not only campaigned for South Africa’s readmission, but also proposed it. The cricket boards of South Africa and West Indies have named the Test series trophy after Sir Vivian Richards. Jonty Rhodes has been a wonderful cricketer, a role model world-wide. His honesty and integrity cannot be questioned. “There is only one Indian cricketer I can think of and that’s Sachin Tendulkar. He’s one of the greatest cricketers of all time, a role model for youth and his behaviour is impeccable on and off the field,” said Dr. Bacher. — Special Correspondent
