VISAKHAPATNAM: Self Help Groups (SHG s) should be allowed to fix their goals and evolve as self-managed autonomous institutions. This was one of the resolutions that were adopted at the two-day seminar on SHGs organised by the Department of Social Work of Andhra University recently. The delegates felt that in the absence of such a regulation, the Government, NGOs and other players were imposing their agendas on the SHGs. It was also resolved that SHGs should follow ethics in promoting micro enterprises. The important delegates included: APCOB General Manager Naga Malleswar, NABARD representative Kalpana, Dr. Raja Reddy, Dr. S. Galleb, Professor Uma and Plan India representative Venkat. Former Director of IGDRS (Mumbai) R. Radhakrishna delivered the keynote address on “SHG as collective approach to poverty alleviation”. The seminar covered six major themes: poverty alleviation and livelihood, women empowerment, role of Social Work profession and NGOs, community building, practice models and professional social work curriculum.
