Hyderabad: Thirty seven prisoners among 15,020 students of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University will receive their degrees and diploma certificates at its 16th convocation ceremony on Saturday. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Vice-Chancellor of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) O.R. Reddy said that prisoners from Central Prisons in Cherlapally, Rajahmundry and Warangal will be among those being awarded the degrees. In addition, B. Ravi who had pursued B.A. from the Central Prison in Warangal is being given ‘The Book’ prize for securing the highest aggregate marks among student prisoners from the State. The convocation will be presided over by Chancellor of University and Governor Narayan Dutt Tiwari who will award the gold medals and prizes. K. Redappa from Chittoor will be awarded two gold medals for securing the highest marks in all the Bachelor Degree streams of B.A., B.Com and B.Sc. Ph.DsThe V-C said that five students will be awarded Ph.D’s, out of which three are from the Faculty of Commerce and two from Social Sciences. Two M.Phil degrees will also be given to students from the Faculty of Commerce. The University is launching seven Masters’ programmes in Telugu, Hindi, Botany, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology and Environmental Studies in addition to courses in computer aided Accountancy and Retail Management as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Entrepreneurship. The BRAOU will also be introducing M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes in 10 more subjects such as Economics, History, Political Science, Public Administration, Sociology, English, Commerce, Management, Mathematics and Library and Information Science. ProgrammesIt is also starting short term vocational and certificate programmes in School Librarian and English Communication Skills, Anchoring, Dubbing, Voice-over, Translation Studies, Tourism and Cultural Heritage in co-ordination with the Distance Education Council of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi. The Eligibility test- 2008 for admissions to BRAOU will be held on April 13 at 26 new centres in addition to the regular 200 study centres all over the State. Over 85,000 students are expected to appear for the test this year, informed Mr. Reddy.
