Get a Master’s degree in Climate Science at IISc.

Bangalore: As evidence of temperatures rising, extreme weather conditions and melting polar ice caps mounts, climate change can no longer be dismissed as a doomsday prophecy. It is no coincidence either that the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to a group of experts studying this global phenomenon. Now, you can join the league of scientists who are working to understand and mitigate climate change.

The Indian Institute of Science has initiated a M.Tech. programme, in Climate Science, at the Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (CAOS).

The programme will begin in August.

The curriculum comprises 15 courses including atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics; oceanic dynamics; clouds, radiative heat transfer and climate; earth system and past climate; observational techniques; satellite meteorology and oceanography; statistical techniques and the numerical modelling of climate.

The severe shortage of trained professionals in the field of climate studies and weather forecasting prompted the initiation of the course, said Ravi Nanjundiah, associate professor, CAOS. “Climate change scientists have never been in greater demand, both in government departments and in industries, where short-range localised weather forecasts are becoming popular,” he said.

The programme is designed for students with a Bachelor’s degree in any branch of Engineering or students with a Master’s degree in Physical Sciences.
