Two women duped of cash, jewellery Crime Notes

BANGALORE: After a brief lull, conmen struck at two places in the city on Tuesday and duped two elderly women of Rs. 20,000 cash and a gold chain worth Rs. 35,000.

The police said that around 8 a.m. two men came on a motorcycle to Samarthana, a home for physically-challenged children, in 2nd Phase, J.P. Nagar. One of them told Annamma, cashier of Samarthana, that they were starting a gold jewellery showroom and needed her blessings.

He told the unsuspecting elderly woman that he wanted to donate money for the physically-challenged children and took out a Rs. 1,000 note from his wallet and asked her for change. When Annamma opened a cupboard to give him change, he hoodwinked her and made away with Rs. 20,000 cash from the cupboard, the police said. On a complaint by Annamma, the J.P. Nagar police have registered a case.

Around 9.45 a.m. the duo accosted Hanumakka (70) at a public call office owned by her son at 1st Cross, Koramanagala. They told her that they needed her blessings for their new venture and gave her a Rs. 100 note. They requested her to wrap her gold chain in the note and bless them. When she obliged, they made away with the chain.

Houses burgled

Thieves broke into two houses on Monday and looted gold ornaments and silver articles worth over Rs. 1.5 lakh.

The police said burglars made away with valuables worth Rs. 1 lakh from the house of Zameel Ahmed Khan, an employee of the Education Department, in Shampura. In the other incident, thieves made away with gold and silver from the house of Puttuswamy, a company employee, in Srinagar.

Killed

A labourer was killed and another injured after the parapet of the fourth floor of a building under construction collapsed on Monday evening. The police said it occurred around 4.30 p.m. in Rose Garden in J.P. Nagar police station limits.
