Contractor-locals rift fuels tension

Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM: Tension prevailed for sometime at Oragadam on Tuesday morning, following an altercation between the employees of an earthwork contractor and some local people.

According to police, a group of local people urged the contractor, who had taken the assignment of levelling 650 acres of land at Oragadam for setting up a multi-national company’s automobile industry, to engage locals for the work. When the contractor — NAPC Limited — agreed to employ local people, the latter demanded higher wages.

Unable to concede their demand, the contractor went ahead with his work by engaging people from Chennai. Irked by the contractor’s decision, a group of local people gathered at the construction site and obstructed work. They also damaged an earth-moving equipment and caused injuries to a worker, Kumar. Subsequently, the contractor lodged a complaint with the Oragadam police.
