Plea on sand quarrying

Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM: The Kancheepuram South District Congress Committee has called upon the State Government to streamline sand quarrying operations in Kancheepuram district, saying that contractors, officials and anti-socials were in collusion in the entire operation.

Alleging that their syndicate had resulted in an indiscriminate quarrying of sand from the Palar riverbed beyond the prescribed limit of 3-metre depth, DCC president V. Annadurai, in a memorandum submitted to the Collector here on Tuesday, said the Palar riverbed was a source of water not only for the villages along its banks but also for important towns on the outskirts of Chennai.
