Handloom weavers’ plea to Centre
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The Tamilnadu Handloom Industry and Trade Association has urged the Centre to supply hank yarn, dyes and chemicals at 15 per cent subsidy to handloom weavers to help handloom products compete in the international market.
Addressing reporters here on Tuesday, association president V.D. Nagarajan said the appreciation of the rupee against the dollar had affected the handloom exporters.
Though the National Handloom Development Corporation was supplying hank yarn to handloom manufacturers and exporters at “mill price,” 90 per cent of the supply “was cornered” by members of the Handloom Export Promotion Council (HEPC). As 80 per cent of the HEPC members were powerloom manufacturers/exporters, they were “misusing” the quota. He wanted the Government to stop hank yarn supply through the HEPC, and instead distribute it through the Director of Handlooms and Textiles of the State Government. Though stamping of handloom mark on handloom products was made mandatory by the Centre in 2006, it was seldom done. He requested the Government to initiate steps to implement the scheme.
Association secretary M.P. Radhakrishnan appealed to the Finance Minister to exempt the profit earned by handloom exporters from income and service taxes.
