A few more promises for Thrippunithura

KOCHI: A few more promises are added to some of the old promises in the budget proposals of Thrippunithura Municipality for the 2008-09 financial year.

For the last several years, the municipality had been allocating funds for a bus terminal near the railway station and for renovating the community hall. But nothing concrete has been done in either of the projects. A sum of Rs.5 crore for the bus terminal and Rs. 50 lakh for the community hall are allocated this year.

There was a mention of cleaning up the Polakulam and building a rejuvenation centre and parking area in the last budget. It has been repeated this time too.

Among some of the new promises are a new bus stand at Eroor, for which Rs. 2 crore has been allocated. The only developmental activity that the municipality had taken up in the 2007-08 financial year was the construction of the new block for the municipality office at the cost of the only open space available for parking vehicles.

With a carry over of Rs. 2,62,69,377 from the current fiscal, the total income of the municipality for the next fiscal is Rs. 32,05,66,390 and the proposed expenditure is Rs. 31,68,78,399, leaving a surplus of Rs. 67,33,164.

All the roads surrounding the town have become busy with heavy traffic during peak hours.

There is no systematic planning to identify smaller roads and develop them to decongest the main road. However, the budget has some proposals worth Rs.70 lakh for construction of road and bridges in the town at various places. There is a proposal to beautify some of the main junctions in the town at a cost of Rs.5 lakh.
