Cusat plans insurance scheme for students

KOCHI: The Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) has proposed a group accident insurance scheme for the entire student community on the campus in its annual budget presented here on Tuesday.

The budget envisaged an approximate Rs.5 lakh a year for the scheme.

Bringing cheers to researchers on the campus, Alphons Kannanthanam, MLA, and convener of the standing committee of the Syndicate on Finance and Purchase, said the post-doctoral fellowship would be hiked from Rs.5,000 to Rs.10,000.

A Syndicate meeting on Tuesday adopted a surplus budget of Rs.19.76 crore, with expected revenue of Rs.195.84 crore and expenditure of Rs.176.08 crore for 2008-09.

Admitting that many of the ventures proposed last year could not be taken up in right earnest due to non-receipt of funds under the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) upgradation programme, Mr. Kannanthanam said the available funds for 2008-09 were just about sufficient to meet the ongoing routine expenses.

Elaborating on the new ventures proposed in the budget, Mr. Kannanthanam said the university central library and libraries of the School of Engineering and Cochin University College of Engineering at Pulinkunnu would be modernised.

Work on the science seminar complex on the main campus would be completed. A new building for School of Industrial Fisheries would come up on the Lakeside campus.

The Department of Atmospheric Sciences would also get a new building.

The budget also made a provision of Rs.50 crore for the IIEST project.
