Science show on wheels

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A fascinating expedition into the mysteries of the world, the rapid development of modern science, the ground-breaking discoveries and the challenges of future technologies – this is one train journey that children will love to be on.

The Science Express, a special exhibition mounted on a train, developed by the Max Planck Society, Germany, which is chugging through 57 cities in the country, has been generating a lot of excitement among schoolchildren ever since it pulled into Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station on Monday.

Tagged an ‘Indo-German Pathway to Discovery,’ the train is the result of a science and technology partnership between India and Germany. It was flagged off by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and German Chancellor Angela Merkel from New Delhi on October 30 last year.

The sparkling white, fully-air-conditioned train has 16 coaches featuring large screen displays, over 150 video clips and multimedia exhibits which deal with wide areas in science, right from the origin of the universe to the cutting-edge technologies of the future.

Some 12 advanced areas of research in science and technology, including mysteries of the universe, material science, tissue engineering, genetics, working of the brain, pathways to sustainable development and preserving the earth’s protective system, have been covered in a visually enthralling manner.

Volunteers from the Departments of Science and Technology are there to take the kids on a tour of the Science Express.

The exhibition concluded on Wednesday and the train will leave the city on Thursday.

The Science Express will reach New Delhi on June 4, after having covered 15,000 km across the country.
