SSA yielding good results

Kakinada: A team of Planning Commission led by senior research officer M. Ramesh Chandra which is assessing the implementation of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) in East Godavari district, met the Collector M. Subrahmanyam here on Wednesday and expressed satisfaction that the project was yielding good results. They described the SSA as a role model worth replicating in other States where the literacy rate is far below the national benchmark.

The team inspected school buildings and other infrastructure facilities and evaluated the teaching methods in schools spread across Addateegala and Amalapuram mandals.

The Collector told the team that ‘School on boat’, ‘Balyaniki Bharosa’ and ‘Balyam Badilone’ were path-breaking initiatives of the Education Department which won widespread appreciation. These were components of the SSA that helped in bringing the children of sections like the fishermen community into the mainstream schooling.

Similarly, efforts are underway to curb child labour with cooperation from officials of the Police, Education and Labour Departments and National Child Labour Project.

Members of the Planning Commission team C.G. Deshmukh and G. Nagaraju, SSA Additional Project Coordinator D.N. Murthy and Social Welfare Department Joint Director P.S.A. Prasad discussed about the SSA and other related issues.
