Congressman tries to cast his ballot openly SI takes him out of the booth and beats him up ANANTAPUR: Tension prevailed in A. Kondapuram village of Putluru mandal in the district on Wednesday during the polling for Ariketavemula MPTC byelection allegedly after a Congress sympathiser tried to cast his vote in the open ballot method. The police had to cane Congress workers to defuse the situation. According to the police and the information reaching here, two polling booths were set up at Ariketavemula and A. Kondapuram for the byelection necessitated by the death of sitting member. A Congress sympathiser allegedly tried to cast his vote in the A.Kondapuram polling booth by stamping his choice openly in front of the polling officers and the polling agents. When the polling officers objected to the Congress sympathiser’s action, Pedda Pappuru Sub Inspector Bhaskar Reddy warned him against such a gesture and when the sympathiser insisted, the SI is learnt to have pulled him out of the polling booth and allegedly beaten him up. Obstruct police vehicleAngered by the police action, Congress workers in the village obstructed the police vehicle, where they were taking the Congress sympathiser to the police station. A verbal duel ensued between the police and the Congress workers and the police had to cane them when the situation was going out of hand. In the melee, the SI fractured his hand.
