dated March 27, 1958: Indians in South Africa

Mr. Nehru said in the Lok Sabha on March 26 that the Indians living in South Africa were “up against something which was most vital to the whole world.” Mr. Nehru said by the policy of segregation practised in South Africa, “we are affected, the South Africa are affected and the Chinese are affected. But all we can do, short of war which is absurd, is to go to the U.N. We do not deal directly with the South African Government.” Mr. Nehru added that the idea of one dominant race ruling over another was a question which challenged the Charter of the United Nations.
