New Delhi: The Election Commission on Wednesday held discussions with Karnataka Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao, Director-General of Police, K.R. Srinivasan and Chief Electoral Officer- designate Vidya Shankar on the State’s preparedness to conduct the Assembly elections in May before the expiry of President’s Rule. The meeting here, presided over by Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami, discussed law and order and availability of police force for the elections likely to be held in two phases. Sources said delimitation of constituencies in all districts had been completed, invoking Rule 24 of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960 (special provision for preparation of rolls on re-delimitation). Revised electoral rolls were being published in stages and the exercise was expected to be completed on March 29, the sources said. At present election officials were identifying polling stations to be located as per the delimited constituencies. The meeting also took stock of vacancies in the police and the State administration and considered the need to fill critical vacancies. In keeping with the Commission’s policy, officers who put in more than three years of service in a particular place would be identified for transfer in the run-up to the elections.
