Actor hits the road to spread safety message

CHENNAI: A few drivers on Kamarajar Salai on Wednesday morning were in for a surprise when Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunil Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police (North) M. Ravi and actor Swarnamalya stopped their vehicles to distribute pamphlets on traffic rules and paste stickers with road safety messages.

They did so as part of the Rotary International District 3230’s road traffic awareness campaign near the Gandhi Statue on the Marina. As a part of the campaign they will be distributing stickers which read “I follow traffic rules,” and a pledge that has 16 points that a law-abiding road user needs to keep in mind, including never to drink and drive, to always adhere to speed limits and observe traffic regulations.

Rotary District Chairman (Community Service) V. Raja Seenivasan said that they expected to continue this campaign at important junctions in the city all through this week.

While Mr. Sunil Kumar read out the pledge, Mr. Ravi released the first copy of a booklet containing information for motorists. Mr. Sunil Kumar said it would be nice to see the day when everyone adheres to the 16 points mentioned in the pledge. “This is what the traffic police would ideally want to happen. Let the message spread far and wide,” he said.

Rotary District Chairman (Road Safety) N. M. Ilangumaran said this was the first step in the quest to create a responsible driver. “We hope that this campaign will have a multiplier effect with those who receive the pledge spreading the word around,” he said.
