6 jail inmates appear for BSE exam

Prisoners and undertrials appearing for the 10th class examination at the Berhampur Circle Jail centre on Wednesday.

BERHAMPUR: Six prisoners started appearing for the examination conducted by the Board of Secondary Education (BSE) of Orissa from Wednesday at the special examination centre opened for them inside the Berhampur circle jail premises.

The six prisoners who are appearing for this examination included two convicts serving life imprisonment, two undertrial prisoners and two juvenile delinquents. Similarly arrangements were made inside Phulbani jail in Kandhamal district for an undertrial prisoner who was to appear for the secondary school examination.

Last year 11 jail inmates had appeared for secondary school examination in different jails of the State and four of them had cleared it successfully.

As per the directions of the BSE authorities the superintendent of the Berhampur circle jail performed the duty as centre superintendent for the exam, while some teachers of nearby high schools were deployed for invigilation at this special examination centre. Describing the examinees of his examination center, Mr Mohanty said out of the six,

Dilip Kumar Sahu (25) and M.Balaprasad (22) were serving life imprisonment for separate murder cases. They were appearing for the examination in regular stream. Two undertrial prisoners of the jail, Budhia Sethi and Rabindra Das, are also appearing for the examination.

Rabindra, who had earlier been unsuccessful, was appearing again as ex-regular candidate. Two juvenile delinquents lodged in the observation home adjacent to the circle jail also reached this examination centre to appear for the secondary school examination.

Mr Mohanty said all inmates of the jail had seriously prepared for the examination. They were provided a separate room by the jail authorities to study without disturbances. They were provided special tutorial classes by teachers brought inside by jail officials. The jail warders and educated prisoners also played a major role in their examination preparations. The jail authorities had procured books, test papers and other study material for them for preparation.
