Property of 45 cr. looted last year

BHUBANESWAR: It may sound exaggerated but true. If the latest White Paper released by State Home Department is any indication, the dacoits and thieves have laid their hands on cash and valuables worth close to a whopping Rs. 45 crores last year.

While valuables worth Rs. 12.21 crore could be retrieved from the criminals, a substantial Rs. 33.08 crores of valuables and cash were still untraceable during 2007. According to white paper, miscreants increased their theft amount by Rs. 5.82 crore in comparison to 2006.

The amount recovered from the robbers suggested that police had fared badly in chasing the anti-socials and getting back the valuables. Less than 30 per cent of stolen properties were recovered in 2007 against 32.45 per of retrieval previous year.

As per the White Paper, 6830 theft cases cases were reported last years whose value could be Rs. 22.94 crores. Similarly, 3073 burglaries that had taken place across the State made miscreants “richer” by Rs. 9.38 crores. In other categories such as loots and dacoities, the worth of valuables was Rs. 6.29 crores and Rs 7.67 crores respectively.

Dacoits appeared on nine occasions in banks, twice on trains and carried out offence 50 times on highways while 67 houses were targeted, the white paper said. As many 17 interstate gangs were traced and 950 dacoits fell into trap of police.

Overall the crime graph of the State soared last year compared to its two previous years. As high as 67034 punishable offences were reported across all the police stations of the State.

“The criminal cases have increased in the State, the situation was more or less under control. In 40,847 cases, police filed chargesheets while another 14064 cases were in advance stage to be charge-sheeted,” home department said in the white paper.

As many as 1210 cases of murder were reported in 2007 compared 1159 in the year 2006 and 1079 in 2005. Mayurbhanj district topped the table where highest 98 cases of murder were reported. The same district also led the graph in rape cases with 74.
