Cooking gas shortage sparks protests

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam, CPI (M) and BJP members staged a walkout in the Assembly on Wednesday protesting against the Government’s “indifference” to shortage of cooking gas in the State.

Disputing Civil Supplies Minister Kasu Venkata Krishna Reddy’s claim that there was no shortage, they said LPG dealers were taking 20 days for supplying cooking gas resulting in hardship to women. They alleged that a cylinder was being sold at Rs.500 in blackmarket and accused the Congress of deceiving people by failing to implement the subsidy of Rs.100 per cylinder. They charged the Government with planning to cancel 10 lakh gas connections.

On whether the Government was going to cancel multiple gas connections with same address, Mr. Reddy said oil companies have been asked to examine if there were any extra connections. Action under the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Order, 2000, would be taken against violators. So far no connection was cancelled and notices were given.

He said a meeting with representatives of oil companies would be held shortly.

‘No irregularities’

Endowments Minister J. Ratnakar Rao denied that irregularities had taken place in appointments for Sri Venkateswara Bhakthi Channel of the TTD.

He informed A.S.Manohar (TDP and other that there were also no malpractices in the purchase of TV sets and production of serials/documentaries.
