CPI to replace 4 national council members

HYDERABAD: The CPI State council on Wednesday decided to replace four members from its quota of 14 members in the national council.

Accordingly, veteran trade union member V.V. Rama Rao, Kisan Sabha representative T.V. Chowdary, agriculture labour union leader Jelly Wilson who was made MLC and former State secretariat member T. Lakshminarayana would not find place in the national council, elections for which would be held on Thursday.

The new members included in their place are: former MLA G. Mallesh, Visakhapatnam district secretary J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy, Guntur district secretary M. Nageswara Rao and State secretariat member S. Venkateswarlu. Meanwhile, the party has asked the State Government to unconditionally lift all the cases “foisted” against the people who participated in the land struggle.

The party condemned the ‘repression’ unleashed by the Government and termed the police action as “undemocratic” and motivated to harass the poor in collusion with landlords and vested interests.

In a resolution adopted at its 20th national congress here on Wednesday, the CPI wanted the Government to distribute pattas and ownership rights to the people who occupied agricultural lands and other lands for house sites.

During the discussion on agriculture, the party delegates expressed concern that the area under foodgrains had come down significantly from 107 million hectares in 1983-84 to little over 100 million hectares in 2006-07.
