Commissionerate for senior citizens sought

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: A state commissionerate for senior citizens should be set up to address the problems of the elderly, according to the Tamil Nadu Senior Citizens and Pensioners Welfare Association.

In his letter submitted to the Chief Minister recently, the association’s state general secretary S.M. Chellaswamy said the state commissionerate must be established for the elderly with sub-offices at the district and block levels.

A state council has to be set up on the lines of the National Council of Older Persons to review the state policy pertaining to senior citizens. The council must have representatives from various quarters, he said. Some of the areas that need to be covered by the commissionerate are financial security, protection of life and property, health care, shelter and issuance of identity cards to the senior citizens.

The senior citizens should get treatment free of cost at government hospitals and primary health centres, concession in bus fare. Establishing of a welfare fund for the aged and measures to protect them from domestic abuse are some of the issues that could be addressed by the commissionerate, he said.
