Citizens protest against CVS

TAXING TIMES: Members and supporters of 23 residents welfare associations staging a protest near Mahatma Gandhi statue in Bangalore on Wendesday opposing the proposed CVS-based property tax.

BANGALORE: Members of 23 residential associations came together to stage protest here on Wednesday seeking withdrawal of proposed capital value-based system for property tax.

The associations under the aegis of South Indian Women’s Association took out a rally from Mahatma Gandhi Road to Raj Bhavan, and was led by S.C. Burman, retired IPS officer and chief coordinator of Coordinating Committee of Residents Welfare Association of Indiranagar. They submitted a memorandum to Governor Rameshwar Thakur.

South Indian Women’s Association president Sujatha Bhaskar said the proposed system was against the interest of property owners and caused hardship. Most citizens were concerned about the huge rise in property tax. It would especially affect the senior citizens and the poor.

“If this system is implemented, senior citizens will be forced to commit suicide. There will be considerable impact on the small entrepreneurs and businessmen also,” she said.

The memorandum said the Bangalore was exempted from adopting CVS for the last five years by the elected representatives at the State and BBMP level. “We strongly protest against this unjustified and unconstitutional pecuniary imposition on the citizen,” the memorandum added.

FKCCI plans stir

The Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) has announced that its members will stage a dharna against the implementation of the CVS. An FKCCI release said: “CVS is going to impose a heavy burden on all categories of building owners.” It said the implementation will result in a “manifold” increase in tax on industrial, commercial, residential and vacant properties.
