BANGALORE: A.K. Gopalaswamy, Engineer-in-Chief of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), on Wednesday said that the city’s first waste to power generation plant at Mandur would be inaugurated in the next two weeks.
Celebrations
He was speaking at the World Water Day 2008 celebrations organised by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB).
The project, which began in 2005, had been awarded to Srinivasa Gayathri Resource Recovery (SGRR) on build-own-operate-transfer basis, he said.
‘No role for BBMP’
“The BBMP will have no role in it except providing 135 acres of land and garbage,” Mr. Gopalaswamy said.
Of the 1,000 tonnes of garbage, eight MW would be generated and the private company would sell power to Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM), he said.
He said that it was the first phase of waste to power project, cost of which had been put at Rs. 70 crore.
“In the second phase, more power will be generated from 1,500 tonnes of garbage,” Mr. Gopalaswamy said.
