BANGALORE: The Court of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities has directed the Department of Primary and Secondary Education to withhold the recruitment for selection of secondary school teachers for 2007-08 till it implements in letter and spirit a Government Order (GO) reserving 5 per cent of seats for the physically challenged. Commissioner Das Suryawanshi passed the order on Wednesday on an application by Ravasaba Madanamatti, a resident of Mahishavadagi in Bijapur district. ComplaintThe applicant, who is orthopaedically challenged, had filed a complaint under Section 62 of the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act of 1995. The counsel for the applicant said that although the State had issued a notification on September 1, 2007 calling for applications for posts of 688 teachers in secondary schools, it had not reserved 5 per cent of the posts for the physically challenged. The Commissioner directed the State to take necessary action to reserve 5 per cent of the vacancies of posts of teachers in secondary schools for persons with disabilities.
