3-month jail for Editor, publisher

Complaint filed against Tamil daily by retired headmaster of government school

CHENNAI: A Magistrate Court in Egmore has sentenced Dinamalar Editor R. Krishnamurthy and its publisher R. Lakshmipathi to undergo three months’ simple imprisonment in a defamation case filed by a retired headmaster of a government school.

A. Sethuraman, who worked as headmaster of the Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Oothukottai, filed a complaint against Dinamalar for publishing a news item on March 16, 2001 stating that he helped students to indulge in copying in the public examination.

Suspended

Following the publication of the report, he was placed under suspension.



R. Lakshmipathi

The news item was wrong, malicious and baseless, he contended.

The order was passed by the XIII Metropolitan Magistrate, Bhagya Jothi.
