A treat of cinema from China

Selected films: Stills from ‘The Banquet’ (left) and ‘Fearless’ (right) to be screened at the six-day ‘China Film Festival’.

A six-day Chinese Film Festival opens at Siri Fort Auditorium in the Capital on Friday. Showcasing contemporary and award-winning films, the festival is being organised by the Directorate of Film Festivals in association with the Film Bureau, China State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China.

Open to the public, the festival will be inaugurated jointly by Information and Broadcasting Secretary Asha Swarup, Chinese Ambassador to India Zhang Yan and China State Administration of Radio, Film and Television Director-General Tong Gang.

“The festival will present nine excellent Chinese films produced in recent years. By depicting different subjects in various artistic styles, they represent Chinese history and culture as well as the charm of Chinese film art. I believe that this film festival will open a window for the Indian audience to understand China,” said Mr. Gang. Stating that Chinese cinema had evolved over the years to become a complete industry engaged in film production, theatrical distribution, exhibition and development of post-theatrical market today, Mr. Gang added: “Both China and India are cradles of world civilisation and enjoy a long history and splendid national culture as well. Furthermore, both countries boast an enormous cinema talent pool. There is great potential for us to work together. I hope this film festival will further promote co-operation and exchange of Chinese and Indian film industries and contribute to the common prosperity and development of the two countries’ cinema.” The Chinese films to be showcased in Delhi have travelled to the Mumbai film festival recently and are part of the cultural exchange programme between the two countries. “Indian films were screened some time back in China and were well received there,” said Directorate of Film Festivals Director Neelam Kapur.

The films to be screened at the festival include “Gun of Mercy”, “Call for Love”, “Fearless”, “Honeymoon”, “Perhaps Love”, “The Silent Holy Stones”, “ A World Without Thieves” and “The Banquet”.
