Leaking lines of KWA

The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has a special squad operating under the Superintending Engineer, Thiruvananthapuram, to check water theft and to detect unauthorised connections.

What the KWA probably needs these days is a squad to check whether its own line employees are doing their job on time.

Time-bound rectification of leaks in the city’s distribution system has always been a sizable chink in the KWA armour. In many locations in the city leaking distribution lines and house connection joints remain unattended for days on end. A case in point is the leak in the Vazhuthacaud-DPI junction road, bang in front of the staff quarters for police officers.

Even on days when it does not rain, this section of the road remains wet and slushy thanks to the continuous supply of treated drinking water surging from the leaking line beneath it. Officials of the KWA who never tire of asking citizens not to misuse water must probably have some good reason to allow the continued ‘use’ of drinking water in this manner in front of the police quarters.
