MALAPPURAM: Minister for Public Works Mons Joseph said here on Thursday that the damaged roads in the State would be repaired before May 15. However, he refused to make any commitment on a package to complete the work before the onset of monsoon. Addressing a meet-the-press organised by Malappuram Press Club, Mr. Joseph said that clogged drainage was a serious threat to the roads in the State. The Public Works Department would launch a drive to clear the drainages on April 15 and complete the work in 10 days, he said. Contractors’ plightThe Minister said the rising cost of construction materials had adversely affected the road repairs in the State. The spiralling cost of cement, tar and metal had caused much difficulties to the contractors, he said. Mr. Joseph said the Public Works Department secretary would hold discussions with the contractors to solve their problems. He said the work on railway overbridges too was going at a slow pace. A joint meeting of the Revenue, PWD, Finance and Railway wings would be convened to expedite the works, he added. Settling arrearsThe government would give Rs.500 crore to settle the arrears of PWD contractors. Kerala Congress (Joseph) district president Chacko Varghese accompanied Mr. Joseph.
