PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry government’s budget for 2008-2009 has evoked mixed reactions from a number of political parties. Member of Parliament M. Ramadass welcomed announcements such as the importance to precision farming, introduction of new varieties of rice, provision of subsidy for cattle feed and compensation package for fishermen. A few provisions presented in the ‘shadow budget’ of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) including the formation of self-help groups for farmers and the establishment of Information Technology parks, have found place in the budget, he said in a statement. However, he said the budget had no special schemes to achieve nine per cent economy growth rate. It was not based on the lines of the 11th Five Year Plan, he added. The budget reads more like an Action Taken Report. Fund allocation for each department had not been specified, he said. Meanwhile, general secretary of the All India Congress Committee and Rajya Sabha Member V. Narayanasamy lauded the announcements. He welcomed the underground drainage scheme for the areas surrounding Puducherry and the construction of road overbridge.
