P.K.H. Tharakan, one of the Advisers to the Governor, disclosed this to presspersons here on Wednesday after visiting the rain-affected villages in the district. According to the proposal, Rs. 5.9 crore was required for giving immediate assistance to those whose property had been damaged; Rs. 4.5 crore for setting up gruel centres, supplying fodder and taking up healthcare measures; and Rs. 2.5 crore for taking up repairs of drinking water supply systems and supplying drinking water, Mr. Tharakan said. There had been no casualty because of the rain, he said and added that the district administration had taken steps to conduct a comprehensive survey of the crop loss. Between March 21 and 25 Gadag taluk receives an average rainfall of 5.7 mm. However, this year it received a rainfall of 145 mm. Nargund and Ron taluks which usually receive an average rainfall of 3.6 mm and 4.1 mm respectively in the period received 160.6 mm and 206.8 mm rainfall respectively, he said. To a query, Mr. Tharakan said that the untimely rain had caused huge loss to crops such as cotton, wheat, jowar, sunflower, “kusube” and “kadale”. Teams comprising village accountants and agricultural assistants had been constituted to assess the damage and they would submit the reports to the tahsildars, he said. On the Central assistance, he said the Union Government, which had responded positively to the two previous proposals seeking assistance for flood relief, was processing the third proposal. Earlier, Mr. Tharakan visited Nargund, Konnur, Holemannur, Gadagoli, Honniganur, Mugali and Sasvihalli villages in the district and heard grievances of the residents. He was accompanied by Mr. Sriraman, Superintendent of Police D. Roopa, Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat B.F. Patil and Assistant Commissioner C. Shikha.
