Semi-autonomous status approved

Special Correspondent

MGM Hospital in Warangal

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said the State government would have no objection to converting MGM Hospital in Warangal into a semi-autonomous institution like seven other hospitals in various districts.

Intervening in government’s response to a question on medical and health in the Legislative Council on Thursday, Dr. Reddy said the existing semi-autonomous hospitals in the State – the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) at Adilabad, Srikakulam, Ongole and Kadapa, the Government General Hospital at Anantapur and the dental colleges at Kadapa and Vijayawada – were given the status to attract talent.

Since doctors and technicians were reluctant to work in remote areas where these hospitals were located, the government decided to upgrade their status so that it resulted in higher pay scales to staff. Dr. Reddy said admissions to MBBS course at RIMS in Adilabad and Srikakulam would start in the coming July. The construction of buildings for these hospitals was going on. However, the college at Ongole would function next year.

Medical and Health Minister Sambhani Chandrasekhar said the government would launch ‘fixed day health service’ programme in all villages. The departmental officers and staff would visit villages on predetermined days in large convoys of vehicles, including mobile laboratories, to treat patients as part of the programme.

Medical Education Minister Galla Aruna Kumari said volunteers under Arogya Mitra programme were being appointed at all Primary Health Centres to treat patients who underwent operations.
