Mobile purchase centre opened in Perambalur

Staff Reporter

PERAMBALUR: The Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation has set up a mobile direct paddy procurement centre (DPC) for the benefit of farmers of Perambalur and Ariyalur districts.

Presiding over a Farmers’ Grievance Redress Day meeting held here on Thursday, Collector Anil Mesharam said the mobile centre would be an additional facility to the full-fledged DPCs functioning at 20 villages including 19 in Ariyalur district and one in Perambalur district.

The mobile unit started functioning on Thursday catering to the marketing needs of paddy growers in remote areas where the arrival of paddy was too meagre to set up a full-fledged centre. Farmers could market their produce by dialling 04328-22440 or 225957 or mobile phone number 94431-39926.

Regional Manager of the corporation K. Shanmugam said the employees and procurement staff would reach the village by a vehicle with scales and gunny bags and procure the paddy. The calls would be attended on seniority basis. The unit immediately visited Kadoor to procure the paddy.

The Collector said damage to rural and district roads and highways, besides infrastructure had suffered extensive damage following the recent showers. The district administration had sought Rs.50 lakh towards temporary repair works and Rs.14 crore for permanent restoration. Standing paddy on 1,845 acres had also been destroyed.

The State government was considering a plan to sanction relief to maize growers whose crop had been affected.District Revenue Officer P. Sankar assured the farmers that revenue officials would not recover under duress, the ‘Tharkavi’ loan sanctioned for augmenting the irrigational sources four decades ago.

Earlier, State secretary of the Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam R. Raja Chidambaram said the revenue officials were insisting on repayment of dues, particularly when the farmers were in need of a certificate.

District president of the Sugarcane Growers Welfare Association A.K. Rajendran urged the Collector to direct the public sector sugar mills at Eraiyur, near here, to divert sugarcane to the adjoining mills, as serious delay in the issue of cutting orders resulted in the loss of sugar content in the cane.

Joint Registrar of Cooperatives M. Pazhanivelu said strict action had been initiated against the secretaries and other personnel of primary agricultural and cooperative banks for their forged acts in sanctioning loans.
