TDP tables no-trust move

Let TDP first take “confidence vote” in the party, says A.P. Housing Minister

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party has tabled a no confidence motion on Thursday, necessitating the extension of the budget session by two more days, most likely on March 31 and April 1.

Three deputy leaders of the Telugu Desam Legislature Party, T. Devender Goud, K. Kala Venkata Rao and Nagam Janardhan Reddy, and other party MLAs submitted the notice to Legislature Secretary Tuljanand Singh.

Legislative Affairs Minister K. Rosaiah indicated that the session could be extended by at least two days to take up the motion after a Business Advisory Committee meeting on Friday. He said the Government was prepared to face the motion and respond to the issues raised by the Opposition. Party sources have said although the no-trust vote is sure to be defeated given the TDP’s strength of 44 in the 276-member Assembly, the TDP leaders feel the motion will provide them an opportunity to bring into focus the all-round failure of the government during the last four years. Moreover, Leader of the Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu, as mover of the motion, will have the final say in the debate unlike in other discussions where the government enjoys the right to reply.

Mr. Devender Goud said corruption and nepotism had reached an all-time high. Almost every major project or prime land was invariably allotted to those close to the Chief Minister and the Ministers and almost every deal that government struck reeked of corruption. Maintenance of law and order was at its lowest ebb. “We know our strength but we want to reflect the people’s view,” he added. Mr. Janardhan Reddy said, “We will insist that the Chief Minister either face inquiry or resign.”

‘No unanimity’

Reacting to the notice, Housing Minister Botcha Satyanarayana wanted the TDP to take a confidence vote in its party to see how many supported Mr. Naidu. There were reports that there was no unanimity in tabling the motion.
