Goa government drops trust motion on Speaker

Special Correspondent

BJP leader says there is no provision

PANAJI: The Goa government on Thursday beat a retreat and refrained from tabling a motion expressing confidence of the House in Pratapsingh Rane as Speaker and Mauvin Godinho as Deputy Speaker.

The move was ostensibly aimed at outwitting the Bharatiya Janata Party, which had made a grievance of the Speaker’s earlier decision to reject Opposition notices of a no-confidence motion against the presiding officers.

Before Chief Minister Digambar Kamat rose to table the motion, BJP leader Manohar Parrikar stood up to say there was no provision for a motion of confidence in the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker and that the government would set a bad precedent by tabling it. He wondered whether it would resign if the motion was defeated. The motion could only lower the dignity of the House and the presiding officers. Embarrassed, the government maintained silence on motion listed for the day.
