CHIKMAGALUR: The Chikmagalur City Municipal Council (CMC) has approved Rs. 6.56 crore surplus budget for 2008-09.

Municipal president Krishna presented the budget at a special meeting held here on Wednesday.

The budget envisages revenue of Rs. 4,374.96 lakh including Rs. 668.41 lakh from the previous year. This includes Rs. 1,446.55 lakh from the revenue account, Rs. 1,714 lakh from the Government for underground drainage and basic facilities and Rs. 546 lakh from the 12th finance plan and special funds for natural calamities.

The budget has earmarked Rs. 11 crore for asphalting roads in new extensions, Rs. 2.25 crore for employees’ salary, Rs. 2.65 crore for street lights and water supply, Rs. 30 lakh for road maintenance and Rs. 40 lakh for diesel and other expenditures.

In addition to this, Rs. 1 crore has been reserved for replacement of old pipelines and Rs. 20 lakh each for patchwork and solid waste management. In a bid to beautify the city, Rs. 10 lakh will be spent to develop parks.

Two major projects including the long-pending demand for underground drainage in new extensions and creation of basic facilities will be undertaken with financial assistance from the Union and State governments.

Various development works will be undertaken under the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns (UIDSSMT) programme and the Karnataka Municipal Reforms programme. The Government will sanction Rs. 11 crore for the former and Rs. 6 crore for the latter this year. Ten per cent of the cost has been reserved in the budget.

A separate account has been created and an action plan prepared to spend 18 per cent of the funds reserved for the welfare of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes people.

According to the guidelines of the State Government, a meeting was convened recently to elicit suggestions from the public. Many of these suggestions have been inculcated in the budget.

Silt will be removed from the Hirekolale tank, which was formerly the main source of drinking water to the city, and the old pipes will be replaced.

Land has been identified on the outskirts of the town for construction of a modern slaughter house and a sewage treatment plant. Importance has been given for disposal of waste. Municipal workers handling waste will be given protective gear.

Municipal Commissioner Narayanappa read out the draft copy of the budget.
