HYDERABAD: The Election Commission of India has appointed senior IAS officer I. V. Subba Rao as Chief Electoral Officer of Andhra Pradesh. He will replace V. Bhaskar, who is going to the Centre on deputation to serve in the 13th Finance Commission in New Delhi. On a request from the Election Commission, the State government had recently sent a list of three IAS officers to enable the commission select one for the top electoral post. Two others in the list were -- G. Sudhir, Principal Secretary (Revenue) and Karikal Valaven, MD, AP Breweries Corporation. Mr. Rao will take charge in two or three days. He occupies the post at a time when the State is heading to witness by-elections to be conducted to as many as 18 Assembly and four Lok Sabha seats. Belonging to the 1979 batch of IAS officers, Mr. Rao carries along with him rich administrative experience, having served in several key positions in the Endowments, School Education and Health & Medical Departments. A fax message from the Election Commission of India conveying its decision to appoint Mr. Subba Rao as the Chief Electoral Officer was received by the State Government on Thursday.
