Police reconstructing sequence of events leading to Rajbir’s murder

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A Gurgaon court on Thursday extended by three days the police remand of Vijay Bhardwaj who allegedly gunned down Delhi Police “encounter specialist” Rajbir Singh over a financial dispute earlier this week.

Bhardwaj was produced in the court following completion of his police remand. The police sought extension of his custody by seven days on the plea that they had to find out how Bhardwaj, a property dealer, obtained the firearm that was used to kill Rajbir, investigate his mobile phone records and also to recover some of the documents related to the case. The court, however, extended Bhardwaj’s remand by three days.

Preliminary investigations into the content of the mobile phones of both Rajbir and Bhardwaj have revealed that the latter had through an SMS sought more time for repayment of money saying he had never let Rajbir down. In his reply, Rajbir allegedly wrote that he had already given enough time and that he would collect the money on Monday, the day he was eventually shot dead in Bhardwaj’s office.

The police are trying to verify Bhardwaj’s movement after he allegedly shot Rajbir in the head on Monday night.

Revolver in question

It is learnt that the revolver used in the crime had been issued in the name of a resident of Jhajjar in Haryana. However, when the police contacted the licensee, he said he already has a weapon. The police are now trying to find out who had got the revolver issued against the same licence, which according to Bhardwaj had been given to him by Rajbir three days before the incident.

The Gurgaon police, relying so far mainly on the disclosures of the accused, are trying to re-construct the sequence of events leading to Rajbir’s murder.

In the absence of any eyewitness, they are banking on circumstantial evidence and the recoveries made on the basis of the disclosures by the accused.
