Elderly woman robbed of jewellery in Jayanagar

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Yet another elderly woman was duped of her gold ornaments estimated at Rs. 35,000 by two people who struck at her house in Jayanagar police station limits on Thursday morning.

The police said that around 8.30 a.m., Ranganayakamma (68), wife of retired engineer Gopal Shetty, was standing in front of her house at 39th Cross, 16th Main, 4th T Block, Jayanagar. Two persons came there on a motorcycle and introduced themselves as businessmen. They told Ms. Ranganayakamma that they were opening a jewellery shop and sought her blessings.

Ms. Ranganayakamma called them into her house. The two gave her three currency notes and made her wrap her three gold bangles in the notes.

They asked her to give them gold chain also. When she refused, they tried to snatch the chain and Ms. Ranganayakamma shouted for help. By the time her domestic helpers could come to her rescue, the two men dragged her till the gate and made away with the gold bangles.

The Jayanagar police have registered a case.

Similar instances of a two-member gang duping several elderly people of their gold jewellery are being regularly reported from South Bangalore areas for the past few days. The portraits of the two men, which were prepared on the basis of the descriptions given by the victims in the earlier cases, were shown to Ms. Ranganayakamma to identify the two, the police said.

Properties recovered

The North division police have recovered properties estimated at Rs. 25.15 lakh by solving 39 cases of dacoity, murder and vehicle theft and have arrested 26 persons.

The police said they have recovered gold jewellery, two-wheelers, cars, mobile phones and other electronic goods from the arrested.

In one of the important detections, the R.M.C. Yard police have recovered six laptops, 50 floppy boxes, 40 CD boxes and two printers, together estimated at Rs. 3 lakh, by arresting three persons on charge of cheating and fraud.

The police gave their names as A. Santosh of Laggere, H.B. Prem Kumar of Mudalapalya and M. Girish of Kamakshipalya.

The police said the accused posed as proprietors of Navataranga Traders in Mallesswaram and as promoters of Navataranga School in Mudalapalya and cheated shopkeepers by presenting them forged cheques towards the purchases they had made.

The fraud came to light when a bank dishonoured the cheques as the signatures did not match, the police said.
