Vodafone to provide phone to senior officers To enhance public accessibility to field-level officers THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala police have joined hands with leading mobile service provider, Vodafone, to make their functioning more transparent, accountable and responsive to the needs of the general public. ‘Kerala Police 24X7’ scheme launched by Minister for Home and Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Thursday aims at giving the public high degree of accessibility to field-level police officers. The function was attended by Director General of Police (DGP) Raman Srivastava, Inspector General of Police (Head Quarters) Loknath Behra, Chief Executive Officer, Vodafone, Kerala, K. Sankara Narayanan among others. The scheme was launched as the public was not able to contact or reach the police officers at the police stations, circle offices as they were pre-occupied with other duties. The 24X7 scheme is an effort to prevent crime and to readdress the grievances of the public. Under the scheme, the mobile phones will be provided to all Station House Officers of 433 police stations, 190 Circle Inspectors, 50 Sub Divisional Police Officer’s, 17 Dy.SP’s of Special Branch, 17 Dy.SP’s of Crime Detachment, 17 Dy.SP’s of District Crime Record Bureaus, Assistant Commissioners of Police (Traffic), Commissioners of Police, Superintendents of Police in the cities and districts, four Range Inspector Generals of Police, two Zonal Additional Director Generals of Police and Director General of Police. All the mobile phone connection will be made available to the public so that they can contact the officers and communicate with them round-the-clock for assistance, for passing on information needed for the police, to report crimes and represent grievances. The scheme is expected to improve the police-public relationship and thereby remove apprehensions about the police in the minds of the citizens.
