2 killed in wall collapse

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: Two seven-year-old students were crushed to death and three five-year-olds injured when the compound wall of their school collapsed on them around 3.30 p.m. at the Vidyapradayini Primary School, Kunnathoor near Mannar here on Thursday. The two children who lost their lives were identified as Akhil, son of Anil and Rema; and Shyamili, daughter of Selvaraj and Jyothi.

The injured, who are recuperating at a private hospital, were identified as Praveen, Maheen and Suraj.

The incident occurred after the day’s examination was over and the children ran out to play with their friends.

Akhil and Shyamili, both Standard II students, were playing with the other three, who were all from standard I, by hanging on to the gate of the school. The gate, according to the police, was fixed to the hollow brick compound wall, which was not plastered and the weight on the gate is suspected to have brought it down on the children.
