Sand lorries seized

KANCHEEPURAM: Six lorries and a sand excavator were seized for transporting illegally quarried sand from waterbodies in Kancheepuram district on Wednesday.
According to police, the Chengalpattu taluk police noticed some lorries being loaded with earth at the Anchur Lake with the help of a sand excavator at around 2 a.m. on Wednesday.
Illegally quarried
On interrogation, it was found that sand was illegally quarried from the lake.
Subsequently the drivers were arrested and the vehicles seized.
Similarly, drivers of two lorries laden with sand abandoned the vehicles and ran away when they noticed the Chengalpattu taluk police conducting vehicle check near Thimmavaram on the Chengalpattu-Kancheepuram Road at around 8. 30 a.m.
Abandoned
An hour later, the driver of another lorry abandoned his vehicle and took to his heels when he found the Maraimalai Nagar police conducting a vehicle check near the Singaperumalkoil Road junction.
On the same day, the Salavakkam police seized two other lorries, when the vehicles were being loaded with the sand quarried from the Palar riverbank at around 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
