For rights: Utensil manufacturing in Tirupur was affected on Thursday as workers went on a strike seeking increase in wages. –
TIRUPUR: As the indefinite strike of utensil workers entered eighth day on Thursday, production of utensils at around 200 units at Anupparpalayam on the outskirts of Tirupur has stopped completely. The 2,000-odd workers of these units have been demanding 50 per cent increase in wages in the wake of spiralling prices of essential commodities and change in calculation of wages based on weight of the utensil instead of number of utensils they make.
Five rounds of talks between the trade unions and Utensil Manufacturers Association for the last three weeks to reach a wage accord have failed.
The trade unions say the new system of calculating wages based on the weight of utensils has resulted in the workers losing money. The next round of talks will be held on Friday.
For years, Tirupur has been one of the major manufacturing centres of utensils.
