Police is trying to implicate Motasim: father

HYDERABAD: Abdul Aleem Islahi, father of Motasim Billah, who was arrested recently, on Thursday charged that the police were trying to implicate his son in false terrorist module cases.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Islahi alleged that the police forcibly extracted confession from his son. “My son has been roaming freely for the past four years. Suddenly, the police picked up him from the house saying he was wanted in cases registered four years ago,” he explained.

Mr. Islahi questioned the police as to what prevented them from arresting his son for the past four years.

He maintained that most of the reports published by newspapers and aired by electronic media about his son were based on his confessional statement. “The statement doesn’t contain my son’s signature and is forcibly extracted,” he remarked. The statement did not explain from where Billah was picked up.

Mr. Islahi ridiculed the claims of police that Billah was a member of Al-Ummah. According to him, Al-Ummah was banned and all its workers were arrested in 1998. Billah was an 11-year-old boy then. “Can anyone believe that an 11-year-old boy could be member of such organisation? If so, why the police did not arrest him then?,” he asked.

Referring to reports that linked his son to the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), Mr. Islahi argued that police should have arrested Billah if they knew he was SIMI member earlier. “Several people used to come to us seeking admission in the ‘madarsa’ being run by us. We don’t know if anyone with the name Adnan, said to be a SIMI activist, ever came,” he remarked.

He appealed to the police and media to consider all these points before linking his son’s name with unlawful activities.
