Endurance: R. Pavithra calls out her answers to her scribe at the examination centre in Madipakkam on Thursday.

TAMBARAM: Sheer will power and determination made a 15-year-old X Standard student take her public examinations, just days after she underwent a surgery.

R. Pavithra, a resident of Kovilambakkam, is a student of Holy Prince Matriculation School in Madipakkam. On Sunday she complained of acute stomach pain. Following this her parents, N. Ranganathan and Parvathy, took her to a private clinic in Kovilambakkam. Subsequently, she was referred to a hospital in Nanganallur.

“The day being Sunday, doctors were not immediately available. However, staff at the hospital made several phone calls and expert opinion was that she had to be operated upon immediately to remove her appendix,” Mr. Ranganathan told reporters.

“We were worried more about her health than the examinations. She is still in acute pain,” Mr.Ranganathan said, while recalling the moments of tension and anxiety the family went through on Sunday evening. The surgery was completed at 1 a.m. on Monday.

“After she recovered, Pavithra insisted on taking her examinations," said Mr. Ranganathan who runs an engineering unit.

“I have been preparing for a long time for the examinations and did not want to lose one year by skipping it owing to my hospitalisation," Pavithra said.

On Monday, her parents and school authorities managed to get permission from the School Education Department for a scribe. Books were sent to her hospital room, where Pavithra made final revisions.

She is being brought to the examination centre — Kings School, Madipakkam — in an ambulance and taken back to the hospital in the same vehicle.
