Seven detained under NSA

CHENNAI: The police on Thursday detained seven persons under the National Security Act. According to an official release, while four of them were attached to the banned Maoist organisation, the other three were involved in smuggling for the LTTE.

The Maoist cadres were arrested in Varsanadu in Theni district and cases were filed against them under various sections of the IPC, Arms Act, Explosive Substances Act and Criminal Law Amendment Act.

The police identified the cadres as Mahalingam of Tiruppathur in Vellore district, Balamurugan, Sellur, Madurai, Muruganandam of Vridhachalam in Cuddalore district and Marudhu of Sivaganga district.

Those involved in smuggling activities for LTTE were identified as Murugapandi and Muthuramalingam and R. Raja.

While Mahalingam was jailed at the Puzhal prison all the six others were jailed in Madurai Central Prison, the release added.
