Stir against changes in CRZ norms planned

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: The Kerala Latin Catholic Association (KLCA) has declared an agitation against the Union government’s reported move to implement the M.S. Swaminathan Committee’s recommendations for changes in the Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) notification norms.

Alleging that the transition from the CRZ notification of 1991 to the Coastal Zone Management (CZM) would be detrimental to the rights of the fishing community and coastal citizens, the KLCA State Committee said the CZM rules would focus more on management of the coast rather than regulation. This would pave the way for destruction of coastal communities and ecosystems apart from displacing many of the communities.

KLCA State president Raphel Antony and general secretary Shaji George said implementation of the CZM approach would help only monopolist powers and tourism lobbies.

The association’s agitation would begin with a public meeting at the Leo XIII High School here on March 30. Alappuzha Diocese Bishop Stephen Athipozhiyil would inaugurate the meeting. K.S. Manoj, MP, K.C. Venugopal, MLA and Matsyafed chairman V.P. Shashindran would participate in the meeting.
