Chitradurga: The Chitradurga City Municipal Council (CMC) has presented a surplus budget of Rs. 30.15 lakh. Presenting the budget for 2008-09 at the CMC Hall here on Thursday, Municipal Commissioner V. Vastrad said that last year the surplus budget was Rs. 58.35 lakh.

Unlike last year, this year’s budget has no special provisions. Last year, a special fund of Rs. 35 lakh was reserved for setting up of a pig park and construction of a slaughterhouse.

The budget was prepared with an opening balance of Rs. 48.54 lakh, while the receipts were Rs. 62.54 crore. The revenue receipts were Rs. 22.31 crore while payment was Rs. 26.93 crore. The capital receipt was Rs. 17.65 crore and payment Rs. 26.93 crore.

Mr. Vastrad said that the city had 25,000 tax payers who had paid Rs. 17.31 crore for 2007-08. The CMC had set a target of Rs. 22.31 crore for 2008-09.

For the supply of drinking water, the CMC has reserved Rs. 56 lakh as compared to last year’s Rs. 40 lakh.

A major share of Rs. 9.40 crore has been earmarked for the construction of roads, while Rs. 2.44 crore has been set aside for the development of slum areas.

The construction of sewage lines has been allotted Rs. 20 crore and Rs. 22.6 crore has been reserved for solid waste management.

He also said that under the Backward Area Development Programme, 11th Five Year Plan, the CMC has sent an action plan of Rs. 4.76 crore to the Union Government.

During the presentation of the budget, many members raised the issues concerning roads, sewages and street lights.

They urged the commissioner to ensure that wards got better road facilities and proper lightings. When a member, Veena Mallikarjuna, sought to know who was paying for repairing roads being dug by private and government telephone operators for laying wires in the city, Mr. Vastrad said that the CMC has collected road cutting charges from the operators for allowing them to dig the roads.

President Gausia Banu and vice-president Rudrani were present.
